On June 28, at the 6th Canada Roundtable (special lecture) held at the Canadian Embassy in Japan, Ms. Laurie Peters, the Canadian Government Representative for OSAKA/KANSAI 2025, spoke about the concept and appeal of the Canada Pavilion, which is just over 280 days away from opening. The following is a summary of her lecture.

1.Canada's Connection with the Osaka Expo

Canada first participated in the World Expo which was held in Montreal in 1967, and then Canada announced its participation as the first overseas pavilion in Osaka Expo in 1970, the first time World Expo held in Asia. The Canadian Pavilion was the second most visited pavilion and was the most popular pavilion among the younger generations at the 1970 Osaka Expo. In addition, the current Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau’s father, The Right Honourable Pierre Trudeau, then the Prime Minister, also attended the Expo, giving us a sense of our connection with Japan. Canada, which announced its first Indo-Pacific strategy in 2022, is looking forward to the 2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo to further strengthen its economic and educational relations with Japan, which is celebrating its 95th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with Canada.

2.The Concept of the Canada Pavilion is “Regeneration"

The concept of the shining white Canada Pavilion is "Regeneration," and the pavilion represents the scene of a frozen river thawing and giving way into vibrant spring (Ice Jam). Visitors entering the pavilion from this "Ice Jam" exterior will experience the warmth and openness that contrasts with it, and will be able to experience the innovation, creativity, diversity, and sustainability that Canada values. Next year will mark the five-year milestone to the deadline of 2030 for achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Canada is a relatively young country and a leader in democracy as one of the most diverse countries in the world. It is believed that the significance of Canada, which could be called an "experimental field for future society," speaking to visitors through the pavilion will be great in measuring the progress of goals such as climate change, fair education, and gender equality.

3.Construction Schedule and Event Plans for the Canada Pavilion

The Canada Pavilion has been vigorously pursuing the construction of an independent pavilion (Type A method) from the beginning, and construction is in progress smoothly. The structure is scheduled to be completed this fall, and the exterior and interior are expected to be completed in March of next year. The Canada Pavilion will be located in the Empowering Lives Zone. While plans for events are still being developed, it has already been decided that May 17,2025 be designated as Canada's National Day, and we would like to plan special events centered on this day. In formulating these events, we will address issues such as youth empowerment and reconciliation with indigenous peoples, while aligning with SDGs goals such as gender, education, and climate change, and we would like to communicate in Japan, Canada’s key partner, themes related to the charm of Canada such as innovation, creativity, resources, foreign direct investment, and education(study in Canada) in this region as part of Canada's inclusive Indo-Pacific Strategy. As for high-level attendance from Canada, we would like to receive visit by many dignitaries and leaders, following the example of The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, who attended the last Dubai Expo. The Canadian government welcomes your ideas and advice to make Canada's activities at the 2025 Osaka/Kansai Expo as meaningful as possible.
